If the heroism and dedication of firefighters are things you just can't
learn enough about, the Internet can help. There are almost 300 firefighting
museums in the United States and Canada, and many have sites that will
satisfy your curiosity about the profession.
The Fire Museum Network is
a great place to begin. The site has a directory of firefighting museums
categorized by location, as well as virtual museums. There are also links to
firefighting sites including magazines and equipment resources.
Ever wonder about the lives of the people who devote their lives to saving
others? Check out the
Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting, which has
biographies of some heroic firefighters as
well as photo galleries
of the museum's exhibits.
A few
historic photos here give virtual
visitors a sense of how hard it must have been to battle raging flames with
these machines. To see an 1867 hand pumper, check out the
Denver Firefighters Museum.
The Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire
Apparatus In America has a collection of apparatus
postcards and articles discussing vehicles used in battling blazes.
The San Francisco Fire Department Museum offers a history of the departments feats as well as an overview of the exhibits at the actual museum.
