Let's Walk the Block
This Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition featuring Harlem Renaissance artist Romare Bearden highlights his famous piece "The Block." The collage is Bearden's representation of a common neighborhood in Harlem during his years of growing up. Take a guided tour, which includes photos and close-ups of the 18-foot long piece, or read about the artist's life, what influenced him and his own influences in the art world. The website also incorporates music - a major influence in Bearden's life - with a selection of jazz to listen to. Use the interactive tool to zoom into and learn more about "The Block," such as the materials used and how it was made. A kid's section includes instructions to make your own collage and a fun game of finding certain items in "The Block."
