The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial depicts the former president in a wheelchair because polio left him unable to walk, though few people knew this when he was alive.
The open-air memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was dedicated in May 1997 following heated debate about how -- or even whether -- to portray Roosevelt's disability.
